Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the option to question particular calls from the official, mirroring the system currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
